Our Vision:

A world where every leader is equipped to build and every community is built to thrive.

EWB-USA is committed to community-driven international and domestic community engineering projects. Each project is driven by and developed to meet the specific needs, resources and constraints of the partnering community(s). We are seeking highly motivated interns who are interested in international or domestic community development and/or engineering, and supporting or improving the experience of our volunteers.

Benefit to Interns:

This is an exciting and unique opportunity to gain experience in:

  • Supporting engineering and international or domestic community engineering programs.

  • Assisting us to improve upon our overall quality and partnerships with our local partners.

  • Conducting research, evaluation, and continuous improvement of our international and domestic programs.

  • Supporting the volunteer learning journey and training resource development.

What You Will Learn:

You will have the opportunity to learn about the different types of projects that EWB-USA implements, our systems, processes, and standards for training volunteers for their work, the standard engineering process, quality control, management, and how we are reporting on our overall outcomes to our stakeholders. In addition to building the skills related to your individual task, you will be positioned well to see how international non-profit organizations operate.

What We Require:

We are looking to hire part-time positions for the summer. An ideal candidate for any of the tasks below would be someone with a passion for the mission of EWB-USA, a communicator, a collaborator, a willingness to take on new opportunities, and a passion for learning. We do not require that the applicants have a technical background in engineering, in fact, we encourage those from any background to apply.

Specific Tasks: Each intern will take ownership over one primary task.  A top candidate should be strongly interested in one or more of the following primary tasks:

  1. Fundraising, Social Media and Storytelling: Engineers Without Borders USA is on the lookout for a motivated and creatively inclined Marketing and Communications Intern to join our vibrant team. In this versatile role, you will be instrumental in curating and presenting impactful stories and successes from our global volunteer journeys. Your responsibilities will include organizing and helping maintain a system that allows seamless access to our visual and creative assets. This position provides a unique opportunity to not only contribute to the creation of compelling content for our digital media outlets but also collaborate with volunteers globally to share their meaningful work. If you are enthusiastic about international development, possess a keen eye for visual storytelling, and thrive in a dynamic communications environment, we invite you to apply, and help play a pivotal role in communicating the impact of our organization and growing our reach to new audiences. Interns will learn about effective fundraising, ethical storytelling and persuasive writing.

  2. Health & Safety: International and domestic travel present inherent risks, and it’s crucial for our volunteers and partners to be well-prepared. This intern will play a vital role in strengthening EWB-USA’s Health & Safety Program by working closely with the Global Health & Safety Manager. Responsibilities will include updating and preparing resources and training materials that empower volunteers and partners to mitigate risk across a range of project and program activities. This internship is an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about supporting safe, responsible engagement and developing an appreciation and skill set for fostering a culture of safety.

  3. Volunteer Engagement:  Volunteers are the cornerstone of the EWB-USA impact that happens around the world. This task will focus on researching what tools, training, and resources chapters use to better prepare volunteers for the work they will do. The intern will outreach to chapter leaders and stakeholders across the country, conduct interviews, review survey data, and document the research. Then the intern will prepare a report of the findings and present to the organization. In addition, the intern will collaborate with the leadership of EWB-USA to support the development of a Volunteer Journey Map to guide the development of a new volunteer onboarding system. This is an excellent opportunity to learn non-profit management, professional communication, and data analysis and reporting.

  4. NGO Partner Capacity Support and Research: NGO Partners are a key component to the EWB-USA partnership model and it’s essential to keep up-to-date information regarding our partners as well as share resources with them to aid them in their capacity goals and efforts. This task will involve reaching out to existing partners and collecting key information about the partners to set a baseline for future growth of partnerships. The intern will also work on a resource library/database for the partners. The intern will learn about EWB-USA partners and have an opportunity to connect with them through this project.

  5. Volunteer Village Improvements: Our volunteers collaborate in an online portal, built on the Salesforce platform, which allows them to track their projects, access the Knowledge Base, review resources, and manage their chapter activities. As this space grows, maintaining high-quality data, well-organized content, and usable media assets is critical to supporting volunteers effectively. The interns will work with staff and volunteers to improve the organization, accuracy, and usefulness of Volunteer Village content and data. Projects may include cleaning and analyzing Knowledge Base article data, reviewing article view statistics to identify trends and content gaps, and organizing and labeling digital media assets using Google Drive or a digital asset management (DAM) approach. Interns will help develop simple standards and documentation to support consistent data and content practices going forward. Interns will gain hands-on experience with data cleanup and analysis, content strategy, digital asset management, Salesforce reporting, and cross-functional collaboration with program, communications, and technology teams. This role is well suited for students interested in information systems, data analysis, nonprofit technology, or digital content management.

  6. Project Sustainability, Monitoring, and Learning – Domestic: This internship offers a hands-on opportunity to build real-world skills at the intersection of engineering, community development, and program evaluation. You will gain experience in assessing the long-term impact of infrastructure projects, learning how engineering solutions evolve over time within underserved communities across the United States. As an intern, you will work closely with Community Engineering Corps staff to explore past community engineering projects and understand how they were implemented, maintained, and adapted after completion. You will help identify 3–5 community partners for follow-up conversations and conduct long-term interviews that provide insight into how infrastructure projects continue to serve communities today. Through these interviews, you’ll strengthen skills in qualitative research, stakeholder engagement, and impact assessment. You will also develop professional experience in synthesizing the findings into overarching themes,  outcomes, and takeaways, culminating in high-level recommendations that inform future program improvement and enhanced story telling. This role is ideal for someone interested in sustainable infrastructure, nonprofit program evaluation, community-based engineering, or public-interest work—and provides tangible experience you can carry into future engineering, planning, or policy-focused careers.

  7. Digital Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET) Training Program: Biomedical equipment failure remains a major barrier to healthcare delivery across low- and middle-income countries. To address this challenge, EWB-USA is developing the BMET Digital Training Initiative, an open-access, hybrid digital training platform that combines modular online learning, open technical repair content, and mobile-optimized learning management systems (LMS) to strengthen biomedical maintenance at scale. This intern task involves collaboration with EWB-USA staff, external content developers, and LMS platform administrators to develop, upload, and manage both written and multimedia training content within the LMS. This individual will play a key role in building the digital infrastructure that supports scalable, accessible, and secure technical education for BMETs in low-resource settings–advancing the platform's readiness towards pilot implementation.

  8. Cost Estimation, Data Cleanup, and Reporting: Having an accurate budget at the start of a project can help chapters and donors understand the commitment involved in delivering a project and result in a shorter time to deliver projects.  This intern will work with an engineer to better understand the past cost of projects and develop tools to better estimate the cost of future projects. The intern will learn project management, cost estimation, and data visualization.

All interns will have the opportunity to:

  • Participating in meetings and discussions to learn about the organization and international development

  • Collaborating with staff in our offices around the world to support their operations
