EWB-USA Internship Summer 2025 (Unpaid)

Our Mission:

Partner with communities and develop leaders to build a better world.

Our Vision:

A world where every leader is equipped to build and every community is built to thrive.

EWB-USA is committed to community-driven international and domestic community engineering projects. Each project is driven by and developed to meet the specific needs, resources and constraints of the partnering community(s). We are seeking highly motivated interns who are interested in international or domestic community development and/or engineering, and supporting or improving the experience of our volunteers.

Benefit to Interns:

This is an exciting and unique opportunity to gain experience in:

  • Supporting engineering and international or domestic community engineering programs.

  • Assisting us to improve upon our overall quality and partnerships with our local partners.

  • Conducting research, evaluation, and continuous improvement of our international and domestic programs.

  • Supporting the volunteer learning journey and training resource development.

What You Will Learn:

You will have the opportunity to learn about the different types of projects that EWB-USA implements, our systems, processes, and standards for training volunteers for their work, the standard engineering process, quality control, management, and how we are reporting on our overall outcomes to our stakeholders. In addition to building the skills related to your individual task, you will be positioned well to see how international non profit organizations operate.

What We Require:

We are looking to hire part-time positions for the summer. An ideal candidate for any of the tasks below would be someone with a passion for the mission of EWB-USA, a communicator, a collaborator, a willingness to take on new opportunities, and a passion for learning. We do not require that the applicants have a technical background in engineering, in fact, we encourage those from any background to apply.

Specific Tasks: Each intern will take ownership over one primary task.  A top candidate should be strongly interested in one or more of the following primary task:

Primary Tasks

  1. Fundraising, Social Media and Storytelling: Engineers Without Borders USA is on the lookout for a motivated and creatively inclined Marketing and Communications Intern to join our vibrant team. In this versatile role, you will be instrumental in curating and presenting impactful stories and successes from our global volunteer journeys. Your responsibilities will include organizing and helping maintain a system that allows seamless access to our visual and creative assets. This position provides a unique opportunity to not only contribute to the creation of compelling content for our digital media outlets but also collaborate with volunteers globally to share their meaningful work. If you are enthusiastic about international development, possess a keen eye for visual storytelling, and thrive in a dynamic communications environment, we invite you to apply, and help play a pivotal role in communicating the impact of our organization and growing our reach to new audiences. Interns will learn about effective fundraising, ethical storytelling and persuasive writing.

  2. Fundraising and Grant Writing: Hundreds of organizations around the world provide grants to construct engineering projects in under-resourced communities. This task will focus on compiling grant opportunities, creating tools and guidance that chapter fundraising teams can use to win grant opportunities. Interns will learn about effective fundraising, grant writing and training development.

  3. Volunteer Engagement: Volunteers are the cornerstone of the EWB-USA impact that happens around the world. This task will focus on creating tools, training, and resources to better prepare volunteers for the work they will do. The tools could help with challenges they might face in the field, while helping to recruit new volunteers and better manage their teams. Interns will learn about creating training materials, leadership skills, and organization management.

  4. STEM Training: Community Colleges (CC) are a great pathway for students interested in STEM fields to transition into traditional 4-year engineering and engineering-adjacent programs and careers. EWB-USA collaborates with community colleges across the country to deliver introductory workshops that foster an interest in STEM fields. Two interns are preferred for this task to help develop training material, collaborate on content development, and support coordination with CC’s.

  5. Project Lessons Learned:  EWB-USA is a learning organization and as such capturing, analyzing and training on previous lessons learned is critical to continuous improvement.  This task will include the review, organization, and auditing of lessons learned for domestic and international projects in Volunteer Village (Salesforce platform). The intern will also write a summary report of the findings.   This task will provide interns with the opportunity to learn more about monitoring and evaluation in relation to international and domestic development.

  6. Project Sustainability - Domestic: EWB-USA volunteers have been engineering projects in the USA since 2014.  Having a clear understanding of how a project started and ended is an important part of understanding how to improve projects going forward.  This task will involve researching our past projects and their outcomes. The project will involve working closely with staff to investigate the current status of recently completed, closed and canceled projects and report on the conclusions of the investigation. The intern will work with staff to research historical project records and engineering documents, evaluate project outcomes and lessons learned. Top candidates will have a strong interest in research, data management and writing.

  7. Cost Estimation: Having an accurate budget at the start of a project can help chapters and donors understand the commitment involved in delivering a project and result in a shorter time to deliver projects.  This intern will work with an engineer to better understand the past cost of projects and develop tools to better estimate the cost of future projects. The intern will learn project management, cost estimation, and data visualization.

  8. International Travel Safety: International travel presents inherent risks, and it's crucial for our volunteers and partners to be well-prepared. This intern will play a vital role in strengthening EWB-USA's Health & Safety Program by working closely with the Global Health & Safety Manager. Responsibilities will include updating and preparing resources and training materials that empower volunteers and partners to mitigate risk on international projects. This internship is an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about international travel and developing an appreciation and skill set for fostering a culture of safety.

All interns will have the opportunity to:

  • Participating in meetings and discussions to learn about the organization and international development

  • Collaborating with staff in our offices around the world to support their operations
